The Chemistry, B.S., Curriculum

The B.S. in chemistry is a dynamic and comprehensive program that includes organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry, as well as mathematics and physics.

Beginning with foundational general chemistry in your first year and progressing to advanced courses in your senior year, your program offers abundant hands-on experience. Through technical electives and specialized lab work you'll develop practical skills essential for your future endeavors and work alongside highly qualified faculty who are dedicated to your success.

Premedical Concentration

An Inspiring Research Environment

Chemistry undergraduates at Florida Tech participate in research in their classes, and often in chemistry internships.

Many students join chemistry faculty research teams, working alongside experienced professors to conduct original research.

Student researchers gain experience working with scientific instrumentation, learn valuable laboratory skills, build a competitive resume—and learn how chemical research is really done.

Our biochemistry research centers on understanding life at the molecular level and developing new biotechnology that improves our quality of life, from light responsive molecules used to research neurological diseases to synthesizing active HSF1 inhibitors that play a key role in tumor suppression.

Analytical chemistry researchers at Florida Tech seek to improve chemical measurements to understand biological phenomena by developing new technologies, such as electrochemical sensors to probe metal toxicity in humans.

Inorganic chemistry research includes green chemistry and designing and developing new molecules for bioinorganic, energy and defense research.

Organic chemistry researchers delve into topics such as discovering new reaction mechanisms and photochemical processes and synthesizing novel compounds.

Physical chemistry research includes theoretical and computational chemistry, electronic structure theory, molecular modeling, deep learning and experimental biophysical chemistry.

Chemistry Capstone Research

As an undergraduate in the chemistry program, you’ll participate in state-of-the-art research projects and relevant hands-on workshops that involve concepts at the forefront of chemistry.

Your Florida Tech undergraduate career will culminate in a capstone senior research project, conducted under the direct supervision of a chemistry department faculty member. Through this project you will integrate your knowledge and apply your skills to a topic of your choosing.

You'll present your work at the Northrop Grumman Engineering and Science Student Design Showcase. Held on campus each spring, this event is well-attended by peers, faculty members, industry professionals and local leaders.

The capstone research project is a great addition to your professional portfolio, highlighting your critical thinking and problem solving skills to potential employers or graduate schools.
